Our fresh Amish made bread is back for the summer. Wholesome loaves are baked fresh on Thursday morning and delivered to Pickens General Store at noon. Pair a slice with a Sillmans locally made fruit spread for breakfast or toasted with cheese for a filling lunch with soup or salad. Throw a loaf in the freezer for a sunday morning breakfast of thickly sliced french toast. Available in both white bread and wheat bread, amish home made bread is a healthy and tasty alternative to pre-packaged breads. In The Fields
The Amish have prepared their fields and planted a variety of crops including field corn, sweet corn, oats, and hay. Each household also plants a vegetable garden for themselves and what is left over after meeting the family's needs for filling the pantry is sold at roadside stands. Roadside stands can be found on nearly every country road in the Heuvelton area where you can purchase fresh vegetables such as carrots, peppers, and potatoes, as well as strawberries and raspberries. Item of the Month: Amish Hats
The Amish Men and Boys that work the fields often spend long hours in the hot sun. They wear uniquely styled straw hats to keep sun off their faces for both traditional and utilitarian reasons. The wide brim keeps sun off their faces and necks and shields their eyes from bright sun. Pickens General Store carries locally made Amish Hats in a wide range of sizes. These wide brimmed hats are great for gardening, golfing, fishing, or just enjoying the outdoors without getting sun in your eyes or a burn on your neck. We encourage you to stop in and try one on. Mr. Pickens
I have written today to tell you all of my most recent adventure. It happened one warm Saturday in May. The store has been wound up in a flurry of activity lately. Construction workers and new customers greet me everyday. This particular morning was warm and sunny and while my fellow employees were loading some furniture I decided to explore the perimeter. Very unfortunately I wandered out of sight and my comrades finished and closed the door. While I was truly enjoying my day out of doors the rest of the staff was sent into a fuss. Search parties were organized and local young people volunteered to knock on all the doors. It was quarter to five and my friends were in a frenzy. They didn't want to close the store and lock me out all night long. As the sun started its descent the search parties were disbanded and the staff of Pickens began to really worry. When thoughts turned to the grim reality that I may have to stay outside all night, I allowed my cover to fall. I had been surveying the scene the entire time from a vantage point just off the parking lot. In a furrow from wheels in the spring mud, I couched waiting for the right moment to reveal myself. At the last moment I peeked out at Mike, the general manager, just as he was getting into his car for one last trip around town looking for me. He scooped me up and proceeded to scold me lovingly. Sometimes these people amuse me with their worry. They seem to be afraid of their own shadows. So take note humans: Run into that big world, and face it head on because if you get lost, there is always someone looking for you.
